The history of Torrox is linked to the Phoenicians, Greeks, Moors and finally
the Christians who arrived in 1488.
The Penon de Frigiliana Castle was the scene of many struggles and during the
1810 – 1812 War of Independence and was reduced to rubble by Napoleon’s army.
The town suffered another blow when it was badly damaged during an earthquake on
Christmas Day in 1884.
The regions wealth and many of the buildings date from the nineteenth century
when it became prosperous through the production of silk, oil, figs, and
sugarcane. In 1890 a sugar factory was also built.
As with most of Spain Torrox has Roman and Moorish origins; Torrox was actually
one of the Roman’s most important cities and you can still see many of the ruins
today. Through excavations many have been found and restored, such as the
Necropolis and the luxury villa near the lighthouse.
The climate here is proudly pronounced as “the best European climate” and the
9km of beautiful sandy beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag.
Torrox Costa is more commercialised than the white washed Pueblo and offers a
variety of hotels, apartments, bars and restaurants. Although it is more modern
and livelier than the Pueblo, it is fair to say that Torrox Costa has been
thoughtfully developed compared to the other larger resorts.
There is a leisure centre here and many sports to enjoy such as water skiing,
paragliding, golf, fishing, tennis, boat trips and beautiful walks.
Local excursions include visiting the White Andalucian Villages, the old town of
Torrox and the renowned caves of Nerja.
The Costa del Sol is aptly named – the sun makes an appearance almost every day
and temperatures range from a mild 8ºC in the winter to a very pleasant 30ºC in
the summer, consequently outdoor activities play a huge part in our lives, from
the more energetic pursuits such as sailing, swimming and golf to the very
popular relaxing pastime of eating and drinking!
Enjoy a plethora of
sports facilities and a dynamic range of culinary delights available in the
wide selection of fantastic
restaurants and cafés in every town and city on the Costa del Sol!
Culture vultures are certainly not forgotten. The magnificent historical cities
of Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Jerez are only a pleasant day trip away. Who
could visit the Alhambra in Granada and not be impressed! Conversely, North
África is an hour’s boat ride across the strait from Algeciras – Morocco,
Tangier, Casablanca - names to fire the imagination.
Enjoy ‘Costa Living’ to the full! Experience the vast cultural heritage of
Andalucía: fairs, festivals, castles, cathedrals, equestrian shows, bull-fights,
fine wines, electrifying flamenco music and dance and much more…
