Antequera is located in the centre of the region that bears its name and in the
northern part of the province of Malaga. It is 45 kilometres from Malaga City;
reached by taking the main autovia out of the capital towards Granada and
watching out for the sign at Las Pedrizas. The valley opens out before us as we
descend down into it, and Antequera is just off to our left on the road to
Cordoba.
Directions from Malaga Airport:
Take Avenida Del Comandante García Morat for 1.2 km
Head towards Malaga (Centro), Ronda de Malaga, Motril, Antequera via N340
Continue along N-340, take Ronda Oeste/A-7/E-15 for 9 km
Exit 241, Cordoba, Granada, Sevilla, take for 500 m, take: N-331 for 28 km
Exit 24, Antequera, Cordoba, Sevilla, on N-331 for 13 km, turn right onto A-354
Antequera has been inhabited since prehistoric times and every generation,
including the Romans, has made it's mark here. The timeline is there to be
followed in this fascinating city's profusion of burial mounds, dolmens, Roman
baths, a Moorish castle and Gothic churches.
The El Torcal mountain range is closest to the town itself, and with the passage
of time erosion has made this area into one of the most interesting and
beautiful in all of Andalucía. Shell and marine-life fossils have been
discovered in the valley, which tells us that the area was covered in water
millions of years ago.
The Pena de los Enamorados is left behind us as we head into the town and this
hill is rich in legend and history. One legend tells of the bodies of two lovers
buried at the foot of the hill, he Christian and she Moorish, who had fled to
the peak to escape from their angry families, and finally threw themselves off
in a suicide pact. True or not is unimportant, because this hill, bordered by
the river Guadalhorce, arouses in all of us the spirit that legends are made of.
The Moors named the place Medina Antecaria and it took on great strategic
importance as a military frontier fortification but it was not until 1830 that a
prosperous middle class emerged as a result of the growing textile industry.
Antequera is now a modern town that is ideally placed to receive tourists, in
which history still lives in its numerous monuments and historical buildings.
The first thing the eye beholds as you start down towards the Antequera plains
is a broad meadowland like an immense tapestry in shades of green and ochre.
Were the space not so large, you might think what you see is an artistic
illusion.
This dazzlingly panoramic view does not reveal the treasure of monumental sites
contained in Antequera, where every corner reverberates with a thousand-year-old
Mediterranean culture forged by all the western civilisations. Antequera is one
of the towns with the most monuments in all of Andalusia; 75 per cent of the
historic and cultural heritage properties of Malaga are found in this
municipality.
On the edge of the town lies the famous Dolmen Caves, the most famous in Europe.
They were discovered in 1905 by a local gardener and are now open to the public.
Just 13km's along a surfaced road is a unique natural beauty spot - Fuente de
Piedra - which has a wonderful lake and is visited by pink flamingos.
The Costa del Sol is aptly named – the sun makes an appearance almost every day
and temperatures range from a mild 8ºC in the winter to a very pleasant 30ºC in
the summer, consequently outdoor activities play a huge part in our lives, from
the more energetic pursuits such as sailing, swimming and golf to the very
popular relaxing pastime of eating and drinking!
Enjoy a plethora of
sports facilities and a dynamic range of culinary delights available in the
wide selection of fantastic
restaurants and cafes in every town and city on the Costa del Sol!
Culture vultures are certainly not forgotten. The magnificent historical cities
of Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Jerez are only a pleasant day trip away. Who
could visit the Alhambra in Granada and not be impressed! Conversely, North
África is an hour’s boat ride across the strait from Algeciras – Morocco,
Tangier, Casablanca - names to fire the imagination.
Enjoy ‘Costa Living’ to the full! Experience the vast cultural heritage of
Andalucía: fairs, festivals, castles, cathedrals, equestrian shows, bull-fights,
fine wines, electrifying flamenco music and dance and much more…
