Mijas Costa is located on a mountain range of the same name, at an altitude of
425 metres.
This mountain range offers a very steep panorama, but is smoothed partly by the
presence of pine groves that embellish the area and heighten the presence of
Mijas, which appears in the sky like a white watchtower, overlooking the sea and
guarding the mountain range.

The first historic reference to the village is by the geographer Ptolemy who
must have been in these lands in the 2nd century A. D. or gathered information
from someone who knew them very well, judging by how precise his descriptions of
some places.
The locality was called Tames during the roman era, and there is every
indication that it generated remarkable economic activity due to its proximity
to the Apian Way that linked the cities of Cadiz and Malaga. The Arabs named it
Mixa, from which the Christians derived the modern name of Mijas.
The Muslims took over the village very soon after landing on the Iberian
Peninsular. They permitted the inhabitants to continue to possess their property
and practice their religion and customs in exchange for a certain percentage of
the agricultural and livestock production.
The Muslims’ good relations with the Mozarabs were obvious in the time of the
strongman Omar Ben Hafsun, with whom they maintained cordial and beneficial
relations since they needed one another mutually. With the death of Omar Ben
Hafsun, Abderraman III re-conquered the area.
Mijas resisted the attacks of the Christian army until the conquest of Malaga in
1487. The emissaries that were sent to Malaga to carry out the surrender were
taken prisoner and some were sold as slaves. In 1494 the municipality’s land was
divided among old Christians. The locality was granted the status of royal
borough in 1521 as a reward for their loyalty to Carlos I during the Comuneros
rebellion; Juana la Loca also declared it to be exempt from payment of sales
taxes (alcabalas).
Mijas was the scene centuries later of an important historical event that took
place on the 2nd of December 1831. General Torrijos landed on the beach of El
Charcon with 52 companions. They went across the municipal territory towards the
mountains, from which they came down to Alhaurin de la Torre to seek shelter in
a mansion that belonged to the Count of Mollina. Days later, on the 11th of
December, the general and his men were executed by firing squad on the beaches
of San Andres in the city of Malaga for having stood up against the absolutism
of Fernando VII.
Once in the village experience the spectacular views of the coast and
surrounding heavily wooded mountains from 425 meters above sea level. There are
no main roads here, instead a web of quaint narrow cobbled streets complete with
terraces overflowing with geraniums, red tiled roofs and archways. Stunning!
Since this village was first re-discovered in the sixties, close to sixty
nationalities have made the pueblo their home and the impact can be appreciated
in the international cuisine, cosmopolitan clubs, the influence of foreign
culture and the arts.
Fortunately the village has still managed to retain some of its quaint
traditions and much of its character; one of the most unusual services being the
donkey-taxis which line the central plaza. Do be careful when climbing up to the
top, past the bullring, as the drop down is quite scary. It must be done though,
if only to muse at the extraordinary panorama which stretches below the 'Balcon
del Mediterraneo’; it will leave you with an unforgettable memory of this
enchanting town.
