Los Barrios is an interesting small town in the Campo de Gibraltar just
inland from the N340 coast road between Algeciras and Sotogrande.
The strategic position of Los Barrios, close to the Straits of Gibraltar,
explains its early settlement which goes back to pre-historic times. From this
period, important samples of cave paintings are preserved; the site sheltered by
the port of Bacinete.
After experiencing the influence of the colonizing Mediterranean peoples, the
current municipality of Los Barrios went through a prolonged Muslim occupation
(7th -14th centuries), thus being the scene of many border fights.
The region was handed over to the Crown in 1502. During the first years of its
existence, colonization was encouraged and the people essentially dedicated
themselves to agricultural pursuits, cattle breeding and forest activities, but
these were complemented by the naval construction industry. Its economical
structure was confirmed and large estates predominated.
It is in the 18th century when, with the occasion of Gibraltar by the English
(in 1704) that the village of Los Barrios was born. Some of the former
inhabitants of Gibraltar settled around the Chapel of St Isidro. Originally part
of San Roque, independence was acquired in 1756.
The main street of Los Barrios, now relieved of traffic by the by-pass, has been
decorated with numerous flowerbeds. Each crossroads has been turned into a small
roundabout with a different sculpture decorating it. Near the 'Fountain
Roundabout' is Paseo de la Constitución, the main walkway.
The old part of the town is on the hill just to the east, centred round the
Plaza de la Iglesia; a typical square, nestled in the shade and embellished with
cast iron benches where townsfolk congregate in the afternoon. Surrounding the
square is the old church and tower of Iglesia San Isidro Labrador, the town hall
(with its interesting facade) and the Casino (not the modern gambling type but
more like a club, the hub of the town's social activity.)
The main street has a statue of a bull and bullfighter decorating one of the
fountains; unfortunately the stone has endured some erosion and a section of the
bullfighter’s hat is no longer visible. In the newer part of town is a new
bullring, one of the most modern in Spain, inaugurated in 1998.
The town also has a very good museum of natural history located in Calle
Calvarion in the old town, to the east of the Plaza de la Iglesia.
The Costa del Sol is aptly named – the sun makes an appearance almost every day
and temperatures range from a mild 8ºC in the winter to a very pleasant 30ºC in
the summer, consequently outdoor activities play a huge part in our lives, from
the more energetic pursuits such as sailing, swimming and golf to the very
popular relaxing pastime of eating and drinking!
Enjoy a plethora of
sports facilities and a dynamic range of culinary delights available in the
wide selection of fantastic
restaurants and cafés in every town and city on the Costa del Sol!
Culture vultures are certainly not forgotten. The magnificent historical cities
of Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Jerez are only a pleasant day trip away. Who
could visit the Alhambra in Granada and not be impressed! Conversely, North
África is an hour’s boat ride across the strait from Algeciras – Morocco,
Tangier, Casablanca - names to fire the imagination.
