Casares Pueblo
Casares is situated between the Ronda highland, the Costa del Sol, and the Campo
de Gibraltar; a landscape of red rocks split by deep gorges in the Sierra Bermeja, of forests and circles of pines which have survived fires, and in the
shadows climb to the peak to join Los Reales (1.440 m.) and the profusion of
highland firs.
The village is spread over two hills, at some 435 metres above sea level, and is
100 kilometres from the city of Málaga. The area records an annual average
rainfall of 860 litres per square metre and the average temperature is 16.6ºC.

Casares is half hidden between the foothills of the Sierra, it stretched across
the mountain sides of the great cliff and it is crowned by the remains of a
historic castle.
The findings in the shelters and caves of Ferrete, Crestellina, Utrera,
Pelliscoso, the Novia hill and the Cortijo de Alechipe show the presence of
pre-historic man.
El Cortijo de Alechipe has also revealed interesting remains which could have
belonged to the Roman town of Lacipo; there are fragments of these remains
conserved in the town hall. Roman remains have also been found in Sierra
Crestellina and the Torre de la Sal on the coast. During the Roman era Casares
had its own coin mint and legend has it that Lacipo was built by Julius Caesar
in gratitude of having a skin complaint cured after bathing in the Banos de la
Hedionda.
There are ruins of an Arabic fort on the top of the cliff on which the town
stands and in the second half of the 16th century the town was the scene of
capitulations which ended one of the Moor revolts.
In more recent history, Casares has the honour of having been the birthplace of
Blas Infante Perez de Vargas, labour lawyer, politician and writer, who is
considered to be the most famous historic figure in Andalucia. He was born in
1885 and died during the civil struggle in 1936.
The municipal territory of Casares stretches between the Costa del Sol, of which
it is a part, the Ronda highlands and the Gibraltar plain. As a result it shows
some of the characteristics of each of those three zones, although the mountain
region more influences its appearance than the other two.
There are deep gorges in the direction of Sierra Bermeja, small pine woods
stretching toward the peak of Los Reales (1,440 metres) and limestone heights in
Crestellina, at the entrance to the Genal valley, where a majestic community
resides: a colony of Griffon vultures that can easily be seen in full flight.
Only 14 kilometres from the bustling and cosmopolitan Costa del Sol, this
locality has preserved in its urban quarter an ambience of quieter times while,
to the extent permitted by good taste, making those renovations to its
infrastructure that modern life demands.
Such balance is anything but easy but in Casares it has been achieved and it is
considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, as evidenced by the fact
that in 1978 it was designated a Historical-Artistic Complex. forming one of the
most beautiful villages in the province.
The Costa del Sol is aptly named – the sun makes an appearance almost every day
and temperatures range from a mild 8ºC in the winter to a very pleasant 30ºC in
the summer, consequently outdoor activities play a huge part in our lives, from
the more energetic pursuits such as sailing, swimming and golf to the very
popular relaxing pastime of eating and drinking!
Enjoy a plethora of sports facilities and a dynamic range of culinary delights
available in the wide selection of fantastic restaurants and cafés in every town
and city on the Costa del Sol!
Culture vultures are certainly not forgotten. The magnificent historical cities
of Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Jerez are only a pleasant day trip away. Who
could visit the Alhambra in Granada and not be impressed! Conversely, North
Africa is an hour’s boat ride across the strait from Algeciras – Morocco,
Tangier, Casablanca - names to fire the imagination.
Enjoy ‘Costa Living’ to the full! Experience the vast cultural heritage of
Andalucía: fairs, festivals, castles, cathedrals, equestrian shows, bull-fights,
fine wines, electrifying flamenco music and dance and much more…
