El Faro forms part of Mijas Costa and is just west of Fuengirola. The region
includes a small beach area on the main coastal road, but the bulk of the newer
buildings are being built north of the coastal A7 (old N340).

Take Avda del Comandante Garcia Morat for 1.2 km

Phoenician colonisers founded this area but it is probable that Bastulos and
other tribes were present at various times.
This coastal area has been subjected to attacks from the sea almost consistently
throughout it's history and even though it is highly developed for tourism, in
the small coves where the mountains reach down to the sea four Vigilance Towers
dating from centuries back can still be seen, these being the Calaburras, the
Torre Vieja, the Torre Nueva (this built in the 19th century) and the Torre de
Calahonda, built in the 16th century.
The area of El Faro is easily recognized by the tall white washed lighthouse
from which the region has taken it’s name. Shallow rocks stretch a fair distance
into the sea making the water a hazard for shipping, hence the need for the
lighthouse to be built.
Compared to the rest of the coast this region has seen less construction but
this could be due to lack of available land more than anything else. It is a
relatively quiet area but holiday makers can still be entertained by its bars,
shops and restaurants.
Be sure to visit the lovely ‘chiringuitos’ along the beach where you can sample
great Spanish food and charm. The shellfish is superb in these beach bars and of
course you must try the local drink ‘tinto de verano’; a mix of red wine and
soda water or sometimes lemonade - a very refreshing summer cocktail.
The beaches around this region have been awarded the Blue Flag; most are
equipped to provide jet skis, water skiing and a number of other water sports.
The Costa del Sol is aptly named – the sun makes an appearance almost every day
and temperatures range from a mild 8ºC in the winter to a very pleasant 30ºC in
the summer, consequently outdoor activities play a huge part in our lives, from
the more energetic pursuits such as sailing, swimming and golf to the very
popular relaxing pastime of eating and drinking!
Enjoy a plethora of sports facilities and a dynamic range of culinary delights
available in the wide selection of fantastic restaurants and cafés in every town
and city on the Costa del Sol!
Culture vultures are certainly not forgotten. The magnificent historical cities
of Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Jerez are only a pleasant day trip away. Who
could visit the Alhambra in Granada and not be impressed! Conversely, North
Africa is an hour’s boat ride across the strait from Algeciras – Morocco,
Tangier, Casablanca - names to fire the imagination.
Enjoy ‘Costa Living’ to the full! Experience the vast cultural heritage of
Andalucía: fairs, festivals, castles, cathedrals, equestrian shows, bull-fights,
fine wines, electrifying flamenco music and dance and much more…
