Alhaurin el Grande is situated at the foot of the northern slopes of the
Mijas Mountains, offering wonderful views over the Guadalhorce Valley, rich in
fruit and vegetable patches, and olive and cereal groves. Located approximately
21 Km from Malaga airport and within easy driving distance to the coastal
resorts, the motorway and Malaga City.
Directions from Malaga Airport:
Take Avenida Del Comandante Garcia Morat for 1.2 km Turn right onto Avenida De
Velazquez/N-340 for 1.5 km Turn right onto Carretera de Coin/A-366 - continue
for 4 Km
Turn left onto A-366 for 15 km
Follow signs for Alhaurin Town Centre
Alhaurin el Grande's privileged location has made it a settlement area for
different peoples in its history, and proof of this are the remains that can
still be admired by everyone.
The Roman column, the Arch of the Cobertizo (of Arab origin), the tower of
Hurique, (also Arab), the Moorish mills of Los Corchos, the parish church of
Alhaurin, built on the site of the old Arab mosque, the sanctuary of Santa Vera
Cruz, the shrine of Cristo de las Agonias and San Anton del siglo, the Lucena
Fountain … are some examples of what you can find in this area.
Archaeological remains from various periods point to human presence of the area
from Neolithic, Iberian, Greek, Roman and Visigoth times. The Moors called it
Alhaurin, and after the re-conquest the El Grande was added to distinguish it
from its neighbouring Alhaurin de la Torre, meaning 'The Garden of Allah', 'The
Hole' or 'The Valley', although recent investigations would suggest also 'The
Free'.
The municipality has other urban areas apart from Alhaurin itself, the result of
its agricultural development, such as Villa Franco del Guadalhorce, el Cigarral
and la Fuente Del Perro.
The principal river is the Fahala, into which the Jurique and the Torres streams
flow. There is also the Pasadas river, which flows from the Barranco Blanco area
through beautiful waterfalls and lakes.
During the 19th century this was the place where the richer families of Malaga
city had their leisure homes!
The Costa del Sol is aptly named – the sun makes an appearance almost every day
and temperatures range from a mild 8ºC in the winter to a very pleasant 30ºC in
the summer, consequently outdoor activities play a huge part in our lives, from
the more energetic pursuits such as sailing, swimming and golf to the very
popular relaxing pastime of eating and drinking!
