Sotogrande is located on the western Costa del Sol approximately 20 minutes from
Gibraltar and 1 hour from Malaga. The nearest town is Estepona to the east and
La Linea to the west.
It would be advisable to have transport when visiting the area.
Directions from Malaga Airport:
Take Avenida del Comandante Garcia Morat for 1.2km
Turn right onto: Avenida de Velazquez / N-340 for 2.5km
Continue along N-340 for 300 m
Take Autopista Del Mediterraneo/A-7/E-15 for 2 km
Continue along for approximately 96 km until Sotogrande
Unlike the majority of the coast with impressive heritages, Sotogrande has only
been in existence for approximately the last ten years. Joseph McMicking and
Alfredo Melian purchased five farms in the region in 1962; they developed the
region now known as Sotogrande.
However, it was in 1997 when the Ryder cup was held at Valderrama golf course
that the area achieved any international significance. There was a lot of media
attention and subsequently the area was transformed with new roads and improved
facilities. Since then Sotogrande is considered the top leisure area on the
coast and Valderrama is ranked as the best course in Europe, attracting
thousands of golfers each year.
Sotogrande is a luxury residential development and yachting marina which covers
approximately 5,000 acres and has the best golf and polo facilities along the
Costa del Sol. It also offers other sports such as horse riding, sailing and
tennis. Through-out the summer there are polo tournaments most weekends and the
sport is played on a regular basis.
The region is relatively quiet apart from Easter, July and August when there
tends to be an influx of families from Sevilla and Madrid holidaying in the
resort. The area is also quite popular with Gibraltarians who want to avoid the
over-crowding of The Rock.
Sotogrande also boasts a protected area called the Guadiaro Estuary; a piece of
marshland covering approximately 27 hectares. It is an attractive area for
walking but is of particular interest to birdwatchers.
The Costa del Sol is aptly named – the sun makes an appearance almost every day
and temperatures range from a mild 8ºC in the winter to a very pleasant 30ºC in
the summer, consequently outdoor activities play a huge part in our lives, from
the more energetic pursuits such as sailing, swimming and golf to the very
popular relaxing pastime of eating and drinking!
Enjoy a plethora of
sports facilities and a dynamic range of culinary delights available in the
wide selection of fantastic
restaurants and cafés in every town and city on the Costa del Sol!
Culture vultures are certainly not forgotten. The magnificent historical cities
of Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Jerez are only a pleasant day trip away. Who
could visit the Alhambra in Granada and not be impressed! Conversely, North
África is an hour’s boat ride across the strait from Algeciras – Morocco,
Tangier, Casablanca - names to fire the imagination.
Enjoy ‘Costa Living’ to the full! Experience the vast cultural heritage of
Andalucía: fairs, festivals, castles, cathedrals, equestrian shows, bull-fights,
fine wines, electrifying flamenco music and dance and much more…
