Cartama is situated at the foot of two small sierras, Espartales (400m) and
Llana (405m), which together form the Sierra de Cartama. Its territory is the
frontier between the Guadalhorce valley region and La Hoya in the Montes de
Malaga. Westward, well within the Guadalhorce region, rises the Gibralgalia
range, where the municipal borders of Casarabonela, Coin and Pizarra meet.
The agricultural plain, which spreads orange trees and vegetables on both sides
of the Guadalhorce, and the rounded hills on the north of the municipality on
which olives and almonds are dispersed with houses, look out onto the beautiful
valley of the Montes de Malaga.

The city has existed since the Phoenician and Roman era, and its municipal
boundaries stretch from the sierra of the same name to the banks of the River
Guadalhorce, most of the region within them being devoted to agriculture,
notably olives, almonds, fruit and vegetables.
Phoenicians settled alongside local tribes and gave the settlement the name 'Cartha',
meaning 'hidden place'. Romans later christened the village "Cartima",
fortifying the location which, standing atop a rugged hill 427 metres in height,
provided a magnificent natural vantage point offering views of part of the
Guadalhorce Valley to the north. The Roman town of Cartama was one of the most
important in the province of Málaga, already enjoying official town status in
195 B.C.
Cartama was also important during the Moslem occupation, given the strategic
nature of its location and the fertility of the surrounding land. The Arabs
renovated and rebuilt the castle, turning it into one of the finest military
bastions in the area but it was captured by troops under the Catholic Monarchs
in 1485. This conflict was immortalised by the Mozarabic wood carvers
responsible for the bas-reliefs which adorn the choir of Toledo Cathedral, still
visible today. Within the municipal boundary stands the district of Casapalma,
once the property of the Count of Casapalma, until an 1811 decree saw it added
to Cartama.
Cartama is one of the largest municipalities in the Guadalhorce region, with its
population spread over an area of 105 square kilometres in two twin towns:
Cartama Pueblo and Cartama Estacion. Besides these, there are nine other smaller
urban areas.
Its archaeological sites are among the best in the province, with fragments of
ceramics, metals, walls, Roman coins and columns having been discovered. Many of
the steep streets throughout the town are cobbled renmants of these times.
Watching over the different settlements through the centuries is the ancient
castle fortress of Cartama, situated on top of the Cerro de la Virgen hill.
