Torrequebrada is an attractive area located in a privileged location on the
beach between Malaga and Marbella in Benalmadena Costa, in the heart of the
Costa del Sol, only 18 km away from Malaga's International Airport.
Directiones from Malaga Airport:
Take: Avenida del Comandante Garcia Morat for 1.2 km
Turn right onto: Avenida de Velazquez / N-340 for 2.5 km
Take: Autopista del Mediterraneo / A-7 / E-15 for 13 km
Exit towards: Exit 213, Mijas - Benalmadena
Take: A-368 for 1.6 km
Historically, this area of Benalmadena Costa is thought to have been the sea
outlet for Roman goods made in the area and was the 'Vigia de la Costa' (lookout
post for the coast); proof of this remains today, with the three existing
watchtowers built over five hundred years ago completing Benalmadena's defensive
system against the attacks of North African pirates. You can see these three
towers at Avenida del Alay, Torremuelle and Torrequebrada respectively.
Torrequebrada which in English means broken tower, gets its name due to the fact
that the watch tower quickly became defective (broke), needing several repair
works in 1504 and 1567. The tower now stands in good condition at the top of a
hill overlooking the cliffs, chalets and beaches in the area.
Torrequebrada today is better known for its five star hotel and casino which are
famous for their live entertainment and conference facilities.
Just opposite the hotel is Benalmadena's oldest golf course which almost
stretches down to the beach.
Torrequebrada has undergone a massive change in recent years. New roads and lots
of construction have meant that this community is now densely populated thus
losing some of its charm. In this area restaurants, a couple of bars and even a
pharmacy have opened providing more amenities for residents. The building of a
medium sized commercial centre has also started.
The Costa del Sol is aptly named – the sun makes an appearance almost every day
and temperatures range from a mild 8ºC in the winter to a very pleasant 30ºC in
the summer, consequently outdoor activities play a huge part in our lives, from
the more energetic pursuits such as sailing, swimming and golf to the very
popular relaxing pastime of eating and drinking!
