The most convenient way to Velez- Malaga would be to follow the motorway towards
Motril from Malaga and turnoff at the Velez-Malaga signpost. The town is 50km
from the city of Malaga and has an altitude of 60m above sea level.
Unlike many of the other towns within the Axarquia region, Velez Malaga is
located away from the coast, protected by mountains and less open to the
elements.
Directions from Malaga Airport:
Take Avenida del Comandante Garcia Morat for 1.2 km
Turn right onto Avenida de Velazquez / N-340 for 1.5km
Turn right onto Carretera de Coin / A-366 for 300m
At roundabout take 2nd exit for 400 m, then right onto Ctra Del Parador for 1 km
Take A-7/E-15 for 45 km, Exit 272 (Velez-Malaga) for 200m
Turn left onto A-335 for 1.2 km
Archaeological relics have been found on the coast at Los Toscanos dating back
to the Phoenicians and there is a cemetery in the town dating back to
pre-historic times called the Cerro Mar y Jardin.
There are several churches that are of historical interest including The Church
of Santa Maria la Mayor (15th century), which was the first building to be
erected by the Christians following their victory over the Moors, and Nuestra
Señora de la Encarnación, originating from the Visigoths and then becoming a
Mosque. The San Juan Bautista church is also interesting mainly for its late
Gothic architecture and the sculpture Cristo Crucificado by Pedro de Mena.
The main feature of the town is the 13th Century Moorish castle which has been
restored and nowadays offers excellent views of the countryside.
Capital of the Axarquía region, Velez Malaga, often simply referred to as Velez,
has a population of approximately 53,000, known as Velenos, and is the centre of
an agricultural region known for its strawberries and vineyards, which produce
the muscatel grapes from which the famous Malaga wines are made.
It is suggested that the reason this town is not located on the coast, as are
all the others in the municipality, is due to an earthquake centuries ago, which
resulted in the devastation of the settlement.
The old town, known as Arrabal de San Sebastian, is a maze of narrow streets
where you will find 16th and 17th century mansions which have recently been
restored.
In July there is an annual guitar competition and free concert held at the
Palace of Beniel and every thursday there is a market where you can purchase the
local produce. However, if you are squeamish then avoid the legalized
cockfighting on Sundays, which draws a big crowd and involves betting!
The Costa del Sol is aptly named – the sun makes an appearance almost every day
and temperatures range from a mild 8ºC in the winter to a very pleasant 30ºC in
the summer, consequently outdoor activities play a huge part in our lives, from
the more energetic pursuits such as sailing, swimming and golf to the very
popular relaxing pastime of eating and drinking!
Enjoy a plethora of
sports facilities and a dynamic range of culinary delights available in the
wide selection of fantastic
restaurants and cafés in every town and city on the Costa del Sol!
Culture vultures are certainly not forgotten. The magnificent historical cities
of Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Jerez are only a pleasant day trip away. Who
could visit the Alhambra in Granada and not be impressed! Conversely, North
África is an hour’s boat ride across the strait from Algeciras – Morocco,
Tangier, Casablanca - names to fire the imagination.

Andalucía: fairs, festivals, castles, cathedrals, equestrian shows, bull-fights,
