Istan Costa Del Sol is a small Andalucian village just 20 minutes inland from
Marbella town. It is situated in the Sierra Blanca, which includes the most
famous mountain known locally as "La Concha". La Torrecilla and Monte Albornoque
are part of the Sierra de las Nieves, which in 1989 was declared a nature
reserve.
The beautiful landscape around Istan is best seen from the lookout point at El
Penon. From here one can see the rivers Verde and Molinos, named for the many
mills along its banks, while the mountains of the Sierra de las Nieves rise in
the background.
The municipal area extends to the foot of the Sierra Blanca Mountains, its
highest peak being the famous La Concha Mountain overlooking Marbella. The
privileged environment of Istán has resulted in the decision to build one of
only two Environmental Universities in Spain there.

In pre-Roman times Istán meant 'The Pass of the Waters' or 'The Gorge Heights'
although the origin of the name is attributed to Moorish times when the village
was known as 'The Highest' (as in highest place).
The area’s first settlers were the Muslims, who in the time of Omar Ben Hafsun
occupied the Arboto fort that was located in a place known as Plaza de Armas.
The actual foundation of Istan, however, was in the mid 15th century when the
Christian troops under the command of Saavedra Urdiales prepared the attack on
the Arboto fortress in 1448. After a battle on the banks of the River Verde the
defeated Arabs fled to the present site of Istan. Here they built a new fortress
of which some ruins still remain; the village’s first houses sprang up next to
this bastion.
When the Moorish rebellion erupted in 1568 Istan did not hesitate to take a very
active part in it, since the lord of the village was the person who was in
charge of fomenting the rebellion not only in the coastal zone but also in the
Ronda highlands. Realising the gravity of the situation, Felipe II dispatched
Luis Ponce de Leon, who finally put an end to the uprising. With the outbreak
squashed and the Moors driven out, Istan was repopulated with Christians, many
of whom came from Murcia and spoke the Panocho dialect, and this term was
applied as a nickname to the residents of Istan.
Istan is a typical Andalucian white village and is just a short drive from the
coast on a hair raising winding road! The streets are narrow and are not suited
for vehicles. It is better to follow the signs for the public parking on arrival
and explore the village on foot.
Walking from the car park you will find the church and a handful of bars,
restaurants and a few shops. It should be stressed that although tourists do
visit the village, it does not cater specifically for tourists.
The Costa del Sol is aptly named – the sun makes an appearance almost every day
and temperatures range from a mild 8ºC in the winter to a very pleasant 30ºC in
the summer, consequently outdoor activities play a huge part in our lives, from
the more energetic pursuits such as sailing, swimming and golf to the very
popular relaxing pastime of eating and drinking!
Enjoy a plethora of sports facilities and a dynamic range of culinary delights
available in the wide selection of fantastic restaurants and cafes in every town
and city on the Costa del Sol!
Culture vultures are certainly not forgotten. The magnificent historical cities
of Sevilla, Granada, Córdoba and Jerez are only a pleasant day trip away. Who
could visit the Alhambra in Granada and not be impressed! Conversely, North
Africa is an hour’s boat ride across the strait from Algeciras – Morocco,
Tangier, Casablanca - names to fire the imagination.
Enjoy ‘Costa Living’ to the full! Experience the vast cultural heritage of
Andalucía: fairs, festivals, castles, cathedrals, equestrian shows, bull-fights,
fine wines, electrifying flamenco music and dance and much more…
