La Linea, or to give it its full title, La Linea de la Concepcion, is located
approximately half an hour from the town of
Sotogrande and 70 kilometres from
Marbella. It is known as the “Gateway” to Gibraltar as it is essentially on the
boundary of Spain and the British territory of Gibraltar. It has a strong
history and has seen many battles and disputes which are raw to this day.
Major Tourist Attractions
As well as being in close proximity for day trips to Gibraltar, La Linea is
known for its excellent sandy beaches. You can choose to relax in the warm sun
or try out an array of water sports. Some of the activities you can do include
water skiing, parasailing and jet skiing. Competitive fishing is also a popular
pastime here. Daily boat trips are available to see the mass of marine wildlife
including dolphins that stay in the local area. There are several excellent golf
courses nearby, including the Sotogrande course. You can also try your hand at
horse riding and polo. The ruins of Santa Barbara Castle offer great views over
the sea and of the rock of Gibraltar. La Linea is also home to one of the oldest
bullrings in Spain and has several interesting museums. There are also many art
exhibitions to enjoy.
Shopping Opportunities
La Linea has many shops that will cater for everyday needs and those gifts you
want to take home from your trip. Most people head over to the rock of Gibraltar
for some tax-free purchases. The bazaars on the rock are all colourful and
brightly lit. You can spend hours browsing the stalls; you can buy items such as
clothing, leather goods, sunglasses, souvenirs and arts & crafts. For serious
shoppers you can have a go at sharpening your bartering skills with the canny
stall holders.
Eating Out and Nightlife
There are many restaurants, cafés and bars to savour in La Linea. Much of the
menu is based on seafood dishes as the town is located so near to the sea. There
are atypical Spanish dishes to choose from and plenty of Tapas. Wine and beer is
widely available and includes some lovely local specialities.
There are many bars with live music and plenty of nightclubs to enjoy in La
Linea. It is very popular with the local residents and ex-pats and so many of
the discos and clubs stay open until the early hours.
