The mountain village of Istan is located at the head of the Rio Verde Valley in
the Costa del Sol region of Spain. Its roots lie with the Moor settlers and it
has experienced turbulent times in the past. Whilst many other nearby villages
had been wiped out by the Christians invading the Iberian Peninsula, Istan was
saved from the same fate, due to its distance from the sea. Once the Arabs began
to vacate the village, the Christian population from Murcia and in particular
its village, El Cristo de Panocho, moved in earning the villagers the nickname “Panochos”.
This traditional nickname is still used to this day.
Main Tourist Attractions
Due to its location to the Presa de la Concepcion Dam and reservoir, which
serves as the source of drinking water for the village, Istan is an attractive
option for those who like watersports. Certain watersports such as canoeing and
sailing are permitted on the reservoir itself; as well as this, keen fisherman
can spend a relaxing and peaceful day on the banks. The nearby hills of the
Sierra Blanca are ideal for walking and hiking activities. There is a lot of
rustic charm in the village itself and the ruins of a Moorish tower can be found
in a small side street. The main attraction of Istan is its small amount of
tourists and its blissful tranquillity.
Shopping Opportunities
As Istan is a traditional and semi-rural community shopping is limited to
browsing the quaint family-run shops that line the narrow streets. For a
traditional Spanish souvenir or gift, you can purchase a number of items made
locally such as jewellery, intricately embroidered linen, pottery and baskets.

Marbella is a short car drive away.
Eating out and Nightlife
Istan has several bars and restaurants that are in keeping with the idyllic and
traditional nature of the rustic Spanish style. As expected, Tapas is a regular
on many of the restaurant’s menus and delicious Spanish cuisine, in particular
seafood, is a prominent feature. Due to its size, there is not a wealth of
establishments to choose from; there is the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing and
peaceful evening in the traditional streets taking in the sounds, sights and
smells of the real Spain.
Nightclubs and discos are absent from this village but due to its proximity to
Marbella, the choice of a vibrant and energetic evening is a viable option and
only a very short distance away.
