Alhaurin de la Torre is a Spanish village that lies approximately 11 kilometres
inland from Torremolinos. Its neighbouring village is called
Alhaurin de la
Grande but is actually nowadays the smaller of the two villages. The meaning of
the name Alhaurin is uncertain but is certainly of Moorish origin. Alhaurin de
la Torre used to have a large tower (Torre) after which the village is also
named. Many native Spaniards use the village as a base and commute to Malaga to
work.
Main Tourist Attractions
The main attraction for visitors to Alhaurin de la Torre is the gardens at El
Retiro. The manor house, which the gardens surround, was a retirement home
created for the Bishop of Malaga, Fray Alonso de Santo Tomas, during the 17th
century. The gardens have been designed so that they reflect the natural habitat
of the creatures within each of its sections. There is undoubtedly a huge array
of wildlife and plants to keep visitors interested. Near the entrance of the
village is a small chapel, the Cristo del Cardon, as well as the chapel of San
Francisco de Paula. Ruins of a Roman villa can be seen too. Golfers will find
the nearby Lauro Golf course which has 18 holes. The short journey to
Torremolinos means visitors can take part in activities such as jet skiing,
surfing or simply relaxing on the beach. There is also a water park and a nature
reserve.
