The island's medical services are very good.
FOR THE HOLIDAYMAKER - Health insurance is no problem. There are a number
of Insurance companies who offer inexpensive holiday cover and your travel
agent will always be pleased to give you details. It is a small expense,
which you should not neglect to indulge yourself in. Good health or an
accident free life can never be guaranteed and holidays are no exception.
RECIPROCAL MEDICAL CARE - The Spanish NHS care is free to EEC residents
provided a British NHS form Nº E111 is shown. Most local chemists and
doctors speak some English and can cope with minor problems. If you need
to call an ambulance this will have to be paid for because they are
privately owned, you can claim for reimbursement on your holiday insurance
on your return. There are several private medical centres open 24 hours,
all with English speaking staff. You will be charged for consultation or
call outs. Should further treatment be required they will advise on
relevant specialists. A new 24-hour emergency number (similar to 999) is
now available 112, with help available in Spanish, German and English.
FOR RESIDENTS - If you become resident from another EEC country you may
use the Spanish National Health System. Our agents can advise you on where
to go for the relevant paperwork. Most locals and many British residents
join the local private health care scheme.
