There are two types of work permits, one for self-employed (AUTONOMO) and
one for employees (CUENTA AJENA).
STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS - Our agents Have a specialist department in
Mahón dealing with this. As a member of the EEC, if you want to work as a
self-employed person in Spain, you now have the same right to do so on the
same terms as a Spanish person. However, nothing is always straightforward
and you might find yourself coming up against officialdom and your
application being rejected for all manner of strange reasons. In broad
terms, the procedure that you have to follow is no different from that
required of a Spaniard and it is as follows:
· You will need, first of all to go to the Inland Revenue authorities
(Hacienda) and take out what is called a "fiscal licence" to undertake the
particular work you have chosen (there are some 1,000 such activities,
each with its own fiscal code number);
· Fiscal licences cost different sums for different activities. The
Licence carries your fiscal number, an obligation to make a quarterly
declaration of payment of IVA and to present annual accounts and income
tax declaration; and
· You may be required to provide proof that you have the right to use the
premises where you intend setting up the business.
It is essential that at an early stage you discuss with our team of
professional advisers your ideas for a business.
BEING EMPLOYED - If you wish to seek work on arriving in Spain, you must
when you first arrive, go along to the National Employment Institute (INSTITUTO
NACIONAL DE EMPLEO) to register for work (DEMANDANTE DE EMPLEO).
