Estepona - Second Post Office to Open

Estepona's second post office is to open in Calle Huerta Nueva in May, in the offices previously used as the Municipal Archive. Work is currently being carried out on the building and is expected to be completed shortly. The councillor for Services, José Ignacio Crespo, says extra staff will be employed once the new post office is open, and it will reduce the pressure on the present post office, which is on the seafront in the town centre. The Huerta Nueva area is also where the new courts and the property register are based, and the municipal water service offices will also be opening there in the near future.

Vélez Málaga – More Parking Spaces

Vélez-Málaga town hall has described a new underground car park in Avenida Toré in Torre del Mar as a priority. The new park will have space for 680 cars. It is part of the council’s plans to create more than 2,000 parking places in the next two years.

Costa del Sol - Improvements To Attract Tourists

A TOTAL of 335 million euros is to be spent by the regional tourism board to adapt the Costa del Sol to the new demands during the next four years.

The Qualifica plan intends to make the Costa a more attractive destination and lure tourists back from other destinations such as Turkey, Tunisia or Croatia.

The plan was announced by regional tourism councillor, Paulino Plata, who said that, with 15 million overnight stays in hotels last year, the Costa del Sol is the most important destination on the Iberian Peninsular. He said the area was a pioneer for mass tourism, and that experience would be useful in the renewal plans.

He noted a loss of competition in price and transport problems as two of the current weaknesses to be overcome.

Benalmádena – Allegations of Building Irregularities

With the Malaya corruption case making headlines worldwide, now the Environmental Prosecutor in Málaga is questioning at least 15 real estate planning decisions taken by the Town Hall in Benalmádena. The regional government is also legally challenging 19 counts of licences granted allegedly against the law in the town, according to the local Socialist party. The Mayor of Benalmádena is another independent, Enrique Bolín, and he in turn has announced judicial action against the Socialist councillors, for their ‘biased propaganda of false accusations with which they want to seriously damage the image of Benalmádena’.

Málaga – 30.000 New Homes To Be Created

The growth of Puerto de la Torre to the north of Málaga will create a new residential area of 30,000 homes according to plans just released. Ten different promoters are joining together to create what is being called a ‘megaurbanisation’. The development will also result in a new entry into Málaga where the new second ring road will meet with the planned Las Pedrizas toll road.

Rincón de la Victoria - Town Improvements

Rincón de la Victoria is due for some big changes over the coming months, aimed at consolidating the area as a shopping and residential area. Part of this change will undoubtedly be the new car park in the Llano de Torroba, an esplanade close to the Town Hall. This will cost 8.8 million euros, and will provide 708 new parking spaces in the town centre, a third of them for residents only. The Sando company will be in charge of the work, which is expected to take a year to complete.

This new area will have a public park measuring 9,000 square metres, which will have an exhibition area for archaeological remains uncovered during the works. This will comprise walkways, a children’s playground area, an open-air theatre space and an area for holding different events.

Marbella – Town Hall Management Committee

The 16 members of the management committee which will run Marbella Town Hall until the next local elections will have to make a public declaration of their property and income, as part of the regulations governing the committee’s function. None of the committee members will be allowed to earn more than the salary of a provincial MP - around 2,000 euros a month - although that may be increased by 800 euros if they have no private income. None of them will be permitted any other earnings from the State.

The committee, which has representation from the four main political parties - PSOE, Partido Popular, Izquierda Unida, and the Partido Andalucista - takes formal control of Marbella on 21st April. Its members will oversee a total of 14 departments, which is half the previous number of departments in the Town Hall which was dissolved by central government on 7th April. Marbella Town Hall was dissolved after the revelations of corruption in the local Council, and the arrest of the Mayor, Marisol Yagüe, and 23 others.
