Details were presented last week of the new 'Marbella Tecnópolis', a Technology Park and residential district which is planned for a 400 hectare site to the north of the toll motorway, on land which lies in the municipalities of both Marbella and Ojén.
This project is the brainchild of the Luque family, who own the chain of Fuerte Hotels, in conjunction with an American company from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Principia Technology Group, and it has strong support from the Junta de Andalucía. The plans were revealed on Friday by Paulino Plata, who is currently the head of the regional government's Public Works, Innovation and Tourism Departments, and who is a possible socialist candidate for Marbella in next year's local elections.
The idea behind the project is to create an area where experts in science and technology, education and business, from all over the world, can live, work, and exchange information. The residential area would contain no more than eight houses per hectare, as 70% of the area would be kept free from building, and the plans also include leisure and commercial services. The cost of the project is calculated to be more than 900 million euros, and the development would take place over a 15-year period.
