Benalmádena – Bus Stop Technology

Benalmádena's new minibuses are to be fitted with sophisticated new equipment which will display information on special screens at certain points of their journeys. This will enable passengers to know how long it will be before they reach the next bus stop and whether there are any traffic jams which could delay their arrival, and it will also include information about cultural events and tourist attractions. The same technology will be installed at the bus stops, and passengers can also request specific information without altering the normal information programme.

Málaga - Metro System Disruption

Construction work has finally begun on Málaga city's new metro system. With a target operational date of February 2009, residents are bracing themselves for years of disruption while the first two lines of the new underground transport system are built. Initial work for Line 2 will see power, water, gas and telephone lines diverted in preparation for the excavators, while the Line 1 project will begin in the summer.

Fuengirola – New Bus Station

Fuengirola Council has provisionally approved the site proposed for the new bus station, beside the Montemar old people's home near the river. The 10,600 square metre site is owned by the local authority, but only half of it will be built upon to protect some of the green areas. Opposition politicians have criticised the choice of location, saying this is one of the few remaining green areas in Fuengirola, and that the bus station will cause even more traffic congestion at the western entrance to the town. Other doubts raised in the past have included the disturbance to residents of the Montemar home.

Benalmádena - Plans to Protect Beaches

Six million euros is going to be spent to equip Benalmádena beaches with new protective jetties. The plans were presented after a meeting between the mayor of Benalmádena, Enrique Bolin, and the head of the Coastal Demarcation Department, Juan Carlos Jímenez. The decision is expected to stop the continual loss of sand from the beaches during the winter storms. “The project will be ready in a month’s time after which it will be put to the public and its environmental impact will be analysed” explained Bolin. “The aim is that, by 2007, it will become a reality” said the mayor. “I hope that we can approve the amplification of the marina so that the jetties can also be integrated into this project” he added.

Bolin also announced that he is currently waiting on the coastal demarcation department to approve a network of pedestrian paths to improve access to beaches in Benalmádena. However, the mayor did not allude to what was going to be done to solve the problem of sand erosion during the last storm in mid-January.

Alhaurín el Grande – New Urbanization

Alhaurín el Grande Council has approved initial plans for a new urbanisation along the Camino de Coín, between El Parral and El Cigarral. The development will probably consist of seven detached houses and 16 townhouses, on a 15,400 square metre site of which 4,000 square metres will be green zones. The pavement will also be extended from El Parral to El Cigarral.

Marbella - Expensive Beach Improvements!

The government is to invest six million euros on improvements to Marbella's beaches this year, a sum which is larger than that invested in beaches in any other municipality. Sand will be taken from the Guadalmansa River, La Bajadilla and Cabopino to regenerate the Casasola, Lindavista, San Pedro, La Fontanilla, La Venus, Calahonda, Elviria and Artola beaches before the tourist season begins. Another major project which is to be carried out along the Marbella coastline this year is the restoration of the old watchtowers at Río Real and Lance de Las Cañas.

Marbella – New Business Support Centre

The Junta de Andalucía is to build a business development centre in Marbella, and among its services will be to provide information to the more than 14,000 foreign business owners on the Costa del Sol who may not be aware of incentives or lines of support available to them. The news was revealed during a visit to Marbella by the Junta's Councillor for Innovation, Science and Business, Francisco Vallejo, last week, who stressed that the town needs a diversified economy because it cannot live on tourism and construction alone. However, he was keen to point out that commerce in Andalucía is going well, as 20,000 new companies are being created each year. The regional government hopes the business development centre will attract well known companies and will be able to create links with firms abroad.

Alhaurín de la Torre - Town Planning Irregularities

The mayor of Alhaurín de la Torre will have to appear in court, reportedly in response to allegations by the local Izquierda Unida party about town planning irregularities. According to the I.U, Joaquín Villanova has sold land which was scheduled to be used for low-cost social housing to private developers for prices below market value, and the political group is also querying the allocation of a contract for works at the Arroyo del Gato and the granting of an opening licence for a restaurant on rural land.

Izquierda Unida members also accuse the mayor of denying them their fundamental rights by allegedly making it difficult for them to have access to some Town Hall documents. Sr. Villanova has denied the claims, and says he will be in court to answer the accusations of refusing access to documents, not because of any allegations about town planning. When the PSOE made a similar accusation in the past, the Town Hall produced thousands of documents which had been made available to the opposition to prove that the claims were inaccurate, and the mayor says all documentation requested in the present case was provided on time and in accordance with the law.

Costa del Sol – 4 Billion Euro Investment

The President of the Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Chaves, has today announced in Marbella the new Territorial Plan for the Western Costa del Sol. The plan envisages an investment of 4.3 billion € on the coast over the next 15 years. The main project will be the new coastal railway line. Chaves presented the plan this morning to local businessmen, mayors and others and said it represented the search for sustainable development for the western Costa del Sol.

A total of nine municipalities, with a census population of 320,000, and a floating population of about 1 million, will be affected by the plan which sees improvements in infrastructures and protection of the environment.

Of the total cost of 4.3 billion €, the regional government will put up 30%, central government 25%, local councils 15% and private initiative 30%.

New infrastructure will take up half of the total investment, and the future provision of water supplies will take an additional 20% of the total with the construction of six new desalination plants.
