Velez-Malaga – New Tramway

The City council will present tomorrow the first of the two trams that will run from Velez Malaga to Torre del Mar, the tram will be the most modern one in all of Spain. The new tramway service will start in February. Each wagon is 31 metres in length and has a capacity of 202 passengers out of which 54 can be seated.

Marbella - Christmas Budget

The budget for the Christmas program in Marbella has been officially reduced by 30 percent, since it has gone from 1.2 million euros that the City council spent last year to 800,000 euros to be spent this year. Nevertheless Marbella will not lack Christmas decorations as they have installed 5 million Christmas light bulbs to adorn the city centre, and planted thousands of poinsettia plants throughout the streets and Squares. The traditional New Years Eve party celebrated in Plaza Los Naranjos (Orange Square) will be on as usual.

Estepona – 2006 Budget

The local government of Estepona describes as very complicated the budgetary situation for next year; so much so that they can only guarantee the salary of the 1,200 municipal workers until March. This was stated yesterday by the first lieutenant mayor of the city Jose Ignacio Crespo in respect to the cancellation of the Saturday Plenary Meeting. The Meeting was supposed to deal and approve 10 city planning agreements for the upcoming year, by which the municipal coffers would have guaranteed an income of 24 million euros two days before the new Law of Suelo (Land Law) of the Junta de Andalucía took effect.

Marbella - Proposal to Dissolve Council

A request was presented by the Partido Popular to dissolve the local Marbella Government at the Andaluz Parliament this week, but it was thrown out. The proposal for the dissolution of the Marbella Council had the support of all parties except the governing Socialists. PSOE used their majority in the regional parliament to defeat the motion.

Costa del Sol - New Land Law

The new Ley del Suelo which has just come into force is having worrying repercussions in Town Halls on the Costa del Sol. The change in the law means that whereas Councils previously received money when they signed building agreements with developers, they will now have to wait until all the subsequent administrative procedures have been carried out, so their expected income for 2006 will be less than expected.

In Estepona, where 27 million euros will now not be available for the municipal budget next year, the Council is warning that it can only guarantee the salaries for its 1,200 workers until March and it will have to explore other avenues to obtain the funds to pay them after that. In Marbella, the mayor, Marisol Yagüe, insists that there is no cause for alarm and that the municipal employees, who number nearly 3,000, will be paid because their salaries are a high priority for the Council.

Alhaurín el Grande – Municipal Budget

Municipal real-estate sales are scheduled to generate almost 6.8 million euros, of which about a million euros will come from the sale of property for the creation of subsidised housing. Of the 6.8 million euros coming in from real-estate sales, 1.2 million euros will go to the purchase of new property.

Central, regional or provincial government subsidies for local programmes or projects in 2006 will come in at almost 1.4 million euros. Officials did not specify the exact amount to be garnered through loans, but indicated that some of the borrowed money will represent only temporary debt because it is for projects – like school or health centre repairs, the construction of a Guardia Civil station and the municipal theatre – for which the Town Hall will later be reimbursed by the central, regional or provincial governments.
