Mijas – Techno Town!
Mijas Council is planning an ambitious project to create a high-tech residential and commercial complex on a four million square metre site beside the motorway, between northern Las Lagunas and La Cala de Mijas. Known as a 'tecnópolis', it will include properties, recreational facilities, green zones, sports and commercial areas, and will be self-sufficient in terms of energy, using solar panels to generate power, recycled water for irrigation and a pneumatic rubbish collection system.
The idea is to create a complex which is perfect for highly qualified professional people who do not have to work in their offices to run their businesses, and high technology computer and internet services are an integral part of the project.
The Mayor of Mijas, Agustín Moreno, says the 'tecnópolis' should attract business professionals from other parts of Europe, and it may include architecture and design studios or decision-making centres for big companies. It is not known how much this project would cost, but about 100 million euros would be needed for the basic infrastructure and the Council hopes to obtain investment from the Junta de Andalucía and the private sector.
